Sacred singing through the ages. 7 December 2025, PART 2 of 7 one-day workshops with choir director, singer and composer Nic Rowley
Workshop dates (all Sundays):
2 November 2025
7 December 2025
4 January 2026
1 February 2026
8 March 2026
12 April 2026
10 May 2026
Time: 10am to 4pm (lunch from 12:30pm to 1:30pm)
Registration and refreshments from 9.30am.
Place: Arc Hall, Hoathly Hill, West Hoathly RH19 3SJ
Each day, you will experience and explore sacred music from different places and times, from the sublime chants of Hildegard von Bingen and the joy-filled songs of the Llibre Vermell de Monserrat, to the inspiration of contemporary gospel music.
Along the way you will experience the sounds of many wonderful choral pieces by composers such as Tallis, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Bortniansky, Fauré, Rachmaninov, Stanford, Vaughan-Williams, Britten, Berthier and more.
Anyone who loves to sing can take part, whatever their level of experience. We will be learning pieces by ear, and there will be notated parts available for those who would like them. We will also provide guide-recordings as mp3s (or CDs if you prefer) to help you learn your individual parts.
We will explore a range of vocal techniques to help you find and develop your voice (everyone can sing, whatever they may have been told in the past!), and we use fun methods to achieve a true sense of togetherness and musical ensemble.
We will also explore the ways that composers of sacred music through the ages created their unique sounds, and will listen to many inspiring examples of sacred signing.
But above all, each day is about singing and making music together, and experiencing the beauty, peace, exhilaration and sense of well-being that sacred choral music brings.
